LONDON -- FIFAs decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar came under further scrutiny as a British newspaper published new allegations that Mohamed Bin Hammam used his wealth and top level contacts to buy support for the oil-rich countrys successful bid. Eric Staal Wild Jersey . The Sunday Times, which last week claimed that the former FIFA Executive Committee member made payments totalling $5 million to senior football officials to seal support for Qatar, also accused Bin Hammam of using $1.7million to secure key Asian votes. It alleged that Bin Hammam arranged government level talks for Thailands FIFA executive Worawi Makudi to discuss a gas sale "potentially worth tens of millions of dollars to Thailand" and that he was invited to visit Vladimir Putin before Russia and Qatars victories in the votes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Under a front-page headline of "Gas deal turns heat on World Cup," the newspaper alleged that Bin Hammam arranged meeting and favours for voters in the months leading to the ballots. The 2010 vote, which awarded footballs biggest tournament to the tiny desert state, is under investigation by FIFAs independent ethics prosecutor. Qatar organizers deny any wrongdoing. In a statement released on Saturday following its Executive Committees second meeting of the year in Sao Paulo, FIFA said "the executive reaffirmed its position of letting the ethics committee complete its work before making any comment." According to the newspaper, which says it had access to millions of secret documents during its investigation, Bin Hammam brokered two secret meetings with Qatari royals to discuss a major gas deal with a senior aide to Makudi. "The exact nature of the deal on the table is unclear, but it came as Thailand sought to save tens of millions of pounds by renegotiating an arrangement with Qatar to purchase 1 million tons of liquefied natural gas each year at a contractual price it considered too high," the newspaper said. The Sunday Times said that Makudi denied that he had received a personal "concession" from his involvement but did not elaborate. Bin Hammam is no longer a committee member of world footballs governing body after being caught up in a corruption scandal surrounding his failed campaign for its presidency in 2011. The Sunday Times claimed that the $1.7 million Bin Hammam paid to Asian officials from funds controlled by his private company Kemco were used as he was campaigning for both the Qatar World Cup bid and for his own re-election to the post of president of the Asian Football Confederation. The newspaper said he was invited to a meeting by Russia to discuss "bilateral relations" in sport between Qatar and Russia on October 30, 2010, a month before the vote on the bids. "Two days later, Qatars ruling emir also flew to Moscow for talks about joint gas production deals between the two countries," the Sunday Times said. Devan Dubnyk Wild Jersey .5 million. The Toronto Argonauts (11-7) look for an opportunity to repeat as CFL champions when they host the surging Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10-8) on Sunday.CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The New York Giants announced Friday theyve acquired three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Jon Beason from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a late-round draft pick in 2014. The Giants said Beason passed his physical. "Its amazing," Beason said in a Giants press release. "It doesnt happen (often) with midseason trades. But the one place I said if I wasnt in Carolina where I wanted to be was with a great organization like the Giants with a winning tradition, leadership, a 4-3 scheme where I can come in right now. I think I can really come out and impact the season." Beason didnt have much of an impact with the Panthers this season. He started the first two games but was benched prior to Carolinas 38-0 win over the Giants on Sept. 22. He played only one snap on defence in that game. Beason broached the topic of wanting to play more with Panthers coach Ron Rivera in a private meeting Thursday. The Panthers then began looking for a new team for Beason. "The trade benefits both the team and Jon," Rivera said. "Well obviously get something out of it and it gives Jon an opportunity to get on the field right now." Its expected that Beason will challenge Mark Herzlich for a starting spot at middle linebacker, providing he can show improvement with his knee injury. The Giants rank 21st in overall defence and 28th against the run. The Giants host Philadelphia on Sunday and then face Chicago on Thursday. "Im a smart player. I learn fast," Beason said in the release. "Being a (middle) linebacker, a lot is on your plate. I think I actually thrive in that position. Im going to get with coach as long as it takes and as fast as I can get it as soon as I want to play." To make room on the roster the Giants placed veteran guard Chris Snee on injured reserve with a hip injury. Beason has been slowed by microfracture surgery last October. Chase Blackburn, a longtime Giant who signed with Carolina this off-season as an unrestricted, replaced Beason in the starting lineup and was more effective. Beason started all 64 games in his first four seasons with the Panthers from 2007-2010 and was given a six-year, $51.5 million contrract extension before the 2011 season. Mikko Koivu Jersey. But his career has been plagued by injuries ever since. The 28-year-old Beason tore his Achilles tendon in the 2011 season opener at Arizona and was lost for the season. He returned last season, but only played in four games before landing on IR again with shoulder and knee issues. He then lost his starting middle linebacker spot to rookie Luke Kuechly. Beason agreed to a restructured contract this past off-season. He started the first two games this year at weak side linebacker, but struggled in pass coverage. After benching Beason the Panthers got their first shutout since 2008, sacking New York quarterback Eli Manning seven times and forcing three turnovers in a dominating defensive performance. Rivera said the plan was to stick with Blackburn as the starter moving forward. "Jon was very professional throughout the situation," Rivera said. "Having Chase start in front of him, he was tremendous about it. He truly was professional and Im not just saying it. He was on board with everything." Rivera said letting Beason go was "very tough because of what he has meant to this organization, what hes meant to this team and what hes meant to the linebackers." The coach said he informed the rest of the players of the news before a walkthrough practice Friday. "Its a part of this business but it just (stinks) that it is," Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith said. "I dont think he did anything wrong. He did the best he can with the circumstances. When he was on the field he played well. When he was IR, he still pushed guys." Smith said he has immense respect for Beason as a person and a teammate. "When your friend gets traded, I dont care how neat things get done, you always think Man, why did you have to do him like that?" Smith said. "Im not saying the organization did him good or bad, but when you see a friend leave you wish him the best, but you wish him here." The Panthers havent filled Beasons roster spot. They are still on the hook for $8 million under the salary cap as part of Beasons prorated signing bonus. Carolina visits Arizona on Sunday.
